For freshmen who doesn’t know what are the basic job descriptions for you, below are the measures. You should be:

  • Ability to periodically perform computer hardware and software updates using available programs and applications.
  • Able to architecturally design and build computer hardware and software systems.
  • Ability to provide technical assistance to all team members regarding computer-related issues.
  • Able to apply secure network protocols for the company’s local and cloud storage accounts.
  • For CpEs in the manufacturing industries, you should be able to validate and test innovative tools.
  • Able to update existing firmware of computers to ensure its efficiency and operation.
  • Ability to apply the latest technology and integrate it with the existing hardware and software of the company to ensure that the company is taking advantage of the new technology
  • Able to draft designs of computer networks for the company and the ability to implement such design locally and globally.
  • Capable to plan, manage & supervise computer hardware/software development, production, installation, and day-to-day operation.
  • Able to update computer hardware components and modify it its better use.
  • Able to program and code using different programming languages.

Personal Experience

During the course of my journey, many have asked me if computer engineering is difficult. Yes and No. Engineering mathematics, software and hardware programming makes this course hard. However, your passion and dedication to finish and learn makes the hard work worth it.

I finished my BS Computer engineering degree in 5 and a half years. It’s funny that I didn’t know how I graduated. But I received Researcher of the Year and Best in Thesis award.

Look at me now, System Administrator of a local government agency, private contractor of residential and commercial buildings and web administrator of this blog who loves to share interesting topics about computer engineering here in the Philippines.

I have to add, i am working at cisco and previously from local telecom company and lot of computer engineer can also work in the same field as Communication Engineer, except in field works(like microwave designed, cell site and some which is regulated by law that you need the license) but major works like, network architectures, solution designed/architecture, operation engineer in telecommunication, automation and orchestration in field of telecommunication or evolving technologies including IoT, and many more that i can’t mention here, that’s how a graduate computer engineer doing – I am currently working as consulting engineer in many telecom company local and international, and also using my software skills to do automation/orchestration on any field that we can apply software and hardware skills that i have learned when i was studying. 😉

    1. Technically, You should be able to perform all things related to computers. Specifically using Microsoft apps (I work under the Government). Based on my experience, High percentage of my co-workers are Gen X, so they always ask me to help them fixing words, excel computations, making reports using ppt.

      On the other hand, if computers and printers aren’t working you should be able to fix those devices or provide some assistance.

      These insights is different from those Computer Engineers working in other agencies and industries. But for me, based on my experience, eto po ang masabi ko Sir.
